The comforting scent of avgolemono chicken soup filled the room as Greek Australian cook and Sweet Greek owner Kathy Tsaples led a special bilingual cooking class for seniors supported by Fronditha Care.

Held in June, the session was more than a lesson—it was a sensory return to childhood flavours and cultural memory for participants of Fronditha’s Social Support Groups. The class marked the beginning of a new partnership between Fronditha Care and Sweet Greek, aimed at promoting healthy eating through culturally familiar, traditional meals.

The seniors learned to make Tsaples’s version of avgolemono soup, with the class rounded out by a shared meal featuring horiatiki salad, olives, dips, and rice pudding for dessert.

“Everything was delicious and fresh,” said group member Angeliki Giannari, savouring the rice pudding.

The collaboration goes beyond cooking classes. Through Sweet Greek’s Cookaborough platform, the initiative will also offer ready-made Mediterranean meals delivered weekly to Fronditha Care clients at discounted rates. Those with Home Care Packages can receive up to 70 per cent of the cost covered.

Fronditha CEO Faye Spiteri highlighted that nutrition is more than a health concern—it is deeply tied to identity.

“The Mediterranean diet is a core part of Greek culture. We know our elders take joy in meals that connect them to their families, traditions, and the food they once grew themselves,” she said.

Tsaples, who created “Sweet Greek at Home” after caring for her own elderly relatives, said the program allows older people to continue enjoying the flavours of their roots:

“For many with mobility or health challenges, having nourishing meals in the freezer is a blessing,” she said.

“This is about food that feels familiar—meals that remind them of childhood and homeland.”

Meals are cooked fresh weekly, with Friday deliveries and orders due by Tuesday. Menus are seasonal and rooted in the Mediterranean diet. Customers can eat them fresh or freeze them.

Beyond Social Support Groups, Fronditha Care also assists home-based clients with meal prep, grocery outings, and offers a Mediterranean dietitian-approved menu in its aged care facilities.
