Bill Papastergiadis, president of the Greek Community of Melbourne, has been named a finalist in the prestigious Australian Law Awards, highlighting his professional contributions as a leading figure in the legal sector.

Papastergiadis, who is also the Melbourne Managing Partner at national law firm Moray & Agnew, is a finalist for Managing Partner of the Year. His nomination is part of a broader recognition of the firm, which has also been shortlisted for Insurance Team of the Year and Pro Bono Program of the Year.

While his public profile is most widely known through his long-standing leadership of the Greek Community of Melbourne, Papastergiadis’ legal career spans nearly two decades at the helm of Moray & Agnew’s Victorian practice. Since taking on the role in 2007, he has overseen the firm’s Melbourne office grow from five to 32 partners and from 20 to over 220 staff, marking significant expansion under his leadership.

In a statement issued by the firm, Papastergiadis said the nominations were a reflection of the collective achievements of Moray & Agnew’s teams.

“We’re honoured to be recognised among the best in the profession on a team and individual basis. These nominations are a testament to the exceptional work of our people and the trust our clients place in us,” he said.

The national awards also spotlight the firm’s focus on pro bono legal work, particularly in areas of discrimination, employment, and housing. Moray & Agnew’s Pro Bono Practice includes a secondment program that places lawyers in community legal centres across the country, a move the firm says addresses the resourcing shortfalls facing the sector.

Papastergiadis said culture had been central to the firm’s ability to attract talent and deliver legal services effectively.

“Culture plays a critical role in the success and sustainability of law firms. It influences everything from attracting top tier talent, retaining clients and internal morale,” he said.

The winners of the 2025 Australian Law Awards will be announced at a ceremony in Sydney on 14 August.
