An appeals court prosecutor has recommended the conditional release of former MP Ilias Kasidiaris, who is currently serving a prison sentence for his role in the neo-Nazi criminal group Golden Dawn.

It is understood that the prosecutor argued that Kasidiaris meets the legal requirements for early release, according to Kathimerini.

The prosecutor cited the fact that he has completed the mandatory portion of his 13 year-sentence and has not committed any disciplinary infractions while behind bars.

Kasidiaris would be subject to strict conditions if his release is approved, including a ban on leaving the country and an obligation to report regularly to a police station.

The final decision on the matter will be made by the competent judicial council.

The 44-year-old, who served as an MP from 2012 to 2019, was sentenced, along with others, in 2020 to 13 years as one of the leaders of Golden Dawn, which engaged in numerous, sometimes fatal, attacks on migrants and left-wing activists and other criminal activities.

Kasidiaris founded the National Party–Greeks in 2020. Following its exclusion from national elections in 2023, he announced his “full support” for the Spartans political party.

Earlier this month, Greece’s Special Highest Court annulled the election of three Spartan MPs, including its leader, after ruling that they had committed electoral fraud as Kasidiaris was the effective leader of the party.
