In a bid to go one step further in welcoming refugees and migrants to Australia, a new community Facebook page has emerged.

Inspired by the widely-recognised blog Humans of New York, in a similar vein, New Humans of Australia features portraits of those born abroad.

The photographs are accompanied by direct quotes from individuals, giving an insight into their lives before and after arriving Down Under.
Of the various people featured, ‘Hassan’ is one of them. From Afghanistan, he arrived in Australia aged 17.

“I came here in 1999 … by myself, without any family. My father was killed by the Taliban,” he explains.

“Then, one day, the Taliban came to our village and took my older brother away. The only reason they didn’t get me was because I was visiting my uncle that day.”

The page, featuring people from Indonesia, Greece, France, Ogaden, Iraq and Afghanistan, amongst others, has gained momentum since appearing earlier this year with more than 35,000 likes.

New humans of Australia has also featured a young couple, students Tasos from Greece and Laure-Elise from France who fell in love at a salsa class (pictured below).

The page has also provided a platform for discussion and interaction between Australians of diverse backgrounds.

Enthusiastic about the concept, one follower wrote: “Thank you for making this page. If people stand together as humans we can transcend these horrors together. It is people like you who make Australia great and I hope we continue to progress through education, understanding and love.”
