The proceedings of the 1st Global Summit of Hellenic Lawyers continued at the Athens Concert Hall as Chief Justice of Australia Stephen Gageler and numerous other distinguished Australian lawyers offered their perspectives.

The summit’s overarching theme is ‘Safeguarding Democracy, Rule of Law and Justice: Global Challenges and the Role of AI’, with Hellenic lawyers from Greece, America, Australia and Cyprus having collected in Athens to address these subjects.

Various panels were held on Tuesday (local time), including one centred on the topic ‘Artificial Intelligence and Democracy: Legal Accountability, Ethical Issues, and Regulatory Challenges Raised by Borderless Machine Technology”.

The panel was moderated by Panagiotis Tantalos, Research Associate to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of South Australia and President of the South Australian Branch of the Hellenic Australian Lawyers Association.

Speakers for it included Dr Melissa Pieris, Judge of the Federal Court of Australia and Ioannis Tassioulas, Professor of Ethics and Philosophy and Director of the Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Oxford.

Another panel was held on the subject ‘Courts, Jurisdictional Mechanisms and Other Mechanisms for Ensuring State Accountability in Australia and Greece’, which was moderated by Sotirios Bregiannos, Lawyer, Founder and Partner of Bregiannos & Associates Law Firm.

Among the speakers were Emilios Kyrou, President of the Administrative Review Tribunal and Federal Court Judge of Australia and the President of the Thessaloniki Bar Association, Dr. Dimitrios Finokaliotis.

The three-day summit is organised by the Plenary of the Greek Bar Association in collaboration with the Hellenic Lawyers Association of New York, the Hellenic Australian Lawyers Association, and the Cyprus Bar Association.

It was officially opened on Monday (local time) at the Acropolis Museum with numerous political and legal figures in attendance.

Among them were Konstantinos Tasoulas, President of the Hellenic Republic, Alison Duncan, Australian Ambassador to Greece, Giorgos Floridis, Greek Minister of Justice, Ioannis Loverdos, Greek Deputy Foreign Minister, Marios Hartsiotis, Cypriot Minister of Justice, Joseph Tsalanidis, President of the Hellenic Australian Lawyers Association, George Zapantis, President of the Hellenic Lawyers Association of New York and Michalis Vorkas, President of the Cyprus Bar Association.
