The milestone 30th year of the Greek Film Festival is set to open with Kostas Haralambous’ “Captain Mihalis”, an adaptation of acclaimed Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis’ novel by the same name.

The film will be screened in Melbourne and Sydney on Tuesday 14 October in what will begin this year’s program of pictures, which marks 30 years of continuous presence in Australia’s artistic and cultural calendar.

The official opening event in Melbourne will take place at the Astor Theatre with screenings also organised on the same day at the Palace Cinemas in Balwyn, Como and Pentridge.

The opening event in Sydney will take place on the same day at Palace Norton Street Cinemas.

The film is set in Crete at the end of the 19th century and tells the story of Captain Mihalis who, in the midst of the revolution against the Ottomans, finds himself trapped between the duty of liberating his homeland and a forbidden love.

More surprises, special guests and events are slated to be announced for the 30th Greek Film Festival in the near future.

The Festival will be held from 14-26 October in Melbourne and Sydney while additional cities like Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra and Perth are expected to finalise screening dates for late October and early November, ensuring that the celebration of Greek cinema will spread to every corner of the country.
