As part of his pastoral visit to Melbourne for the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, Archbishop Makarios of Australia chaired a clergy assembly for priests serving in the Archdiocesan Districts of Melbourne and Country Victoria.
Held on Thursday at the Archdiocesan Church of St Eustathios, the gathering was attended by Bishops Kyriakos of Sozopolis and Evmenios of Kerasounta.
In his keynote address, titled “Multiculturalism and Social Racism,” Archbishop Makarios reflected on Orthodoxy’s role in a multicultural society. Drawing on the Apostle Paul’s words in Galatians 3:26-28, he emphasised that Christian identity embraces diversity without erasing it, uniting all through faith and love.
He underlined that the Triune God is one of diversity and communion, and that engaging with people of different backgrounds can be a divine opportunity for deeper understanding and a richer experience of faith. Christ Himself, he noted, broke social barriers by speaking with the marginalised, showing compassion to outsiders, and teaching love even towards one’s enemies.
The Archbishop concluded that the Incarnation is the ultimate example of acceptance and cultural openness, setting a divine standard for overcoming prejudice.
Following the address, clergy exchanged views and discussed pastoral and administrative matters, with the Archbishop offering guidance and direction.
