Heidelberg United has achieved what seemed near impossible, downing a second A-League opponent in a row to earn a maiden berth in the Australia Cup semi-finals.

“Alexandros” has overcome insurmountable odds to finally get past the quarter-finals stage of the Australia Cup on the fifth time of asking.

Their latest victory came against Wellington Phoenix on Tuesday night, beating the New Zealand side 4-0 at Olympic Village.

The victory comes off the back of their win over Western Sydney Wanderers, meaning they managed back-to-back upsets over A-League opposition to finally advance to the final four.

Heidelberg opened the scoring in the 34th minute of the clash in fortuitous fashion after Wellington defender Isaac Hughes inadvertently sent a back pass past goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi and into the net.

The credit for the second belonged all to “Alexandros” as Max Bisetto unleashed a phenomenal strike from distance that sailed into the top right corner in the 47th minute of the match.

Asahi Yokokawa made it three just four minutes later after the ball fell to him in the box and he buried it into the goal.

Chok Dau then added the icing on the cake in the 85th minute with a beautiful curling finish into the top right corner.

Heidelberg coach John Anastasiadis spoke on the win in an interview on the club’s Facebook page,

“After the last game against Western Sydney, the boys had a lot of belief…they came out with intention to create history and they did that today,” Anastasiadis said.

The victory also marks an historic moment for the club in terms of Cupsets as they became the first NPL level team to earn four victories against A-League sides in the competition.

The Cup will not get any easier for them as their next opponent will be the winner of Sydney FC and Auckland FC.
