Greece has a new representative in Sydney, with George Skemperis officially assuming his duties as Consul General on 20 August.
Skemperis brings extensive diplomatic experience to the role, having previously served at the Permanent Representation of Greece to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, the Embassy of Greece in Abuja, Nigeria, as well as in several senior positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens, including the Directorate for Cyprus.
Most recently, he served as Director of the Diplomatic Cabinet of the Deputy Minister for Economic Diplomacy and Extroversion, before his appointment to Sydney.
An academic by background, Skemperis studied History and Archaeology at the University of Ioannina and completed postgraduate studies in International Relations and Negotiations at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University, New York.
In his new role, Skemperis said he is eager to connect with the Greek community of Sydney and New South Wales, pledging to work closely with its institutions and organisations “for the benefit of the Greek diaspora.”
His appointment is expected to strengthen ties between Greece and Australia’s largest Greek community, building on longstanding cultural, diplomatic and business connections.
