Stefanos Tsitsipas’s US Open campaign has come to an end after a five-set loss to Germany’s Daniel Altmaier in the second round.

The Greek, seeded No. 26, fell 7-6 (5), 1-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a four-hour-26-minute contest at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

Tsitsipas held a match point on return in the tenth game of the deciding set but was denied as Altmaier held firm and closed out the match.

Tsitsipas struck 17 aces and 72 winners, breaking serve four times, but could not convert when it mattered most.

The result meant he finished 2025 without reaching the third round of a major.

He was knocked out in the first round of the Australian Open by Alex Michelsen, suffered a heavy defeat to Matteo Gigante at Roland Garros, and retired in his opening Wimbledon match against Valentin Royer after losing the first two sets.

Altmaier, ranked No. 56, advances to face Australia’s Alex De Minaur, the No. 8 seed, in the third round.
