From inception up until the setting up process, how did you start your business?
I started out with a Science and Mathematics degree, however, a burgeoning creativity was beckoning and it was through jewellery that I fulfilled that niche. After completing studies in jewellery and object design , I was part of a studio in Sydney for several years.
My path took a turn again when I moved into the retail jewellery sector to become a product buyer for a major jewellery retail chain. Travelling nationally and internationally, I gained an understanding of what sells and the business of the jewellery trade.
It was during an overseas buying trip that the artist within needed a creative outlet again, and so Connie Dimas- Jewellery by Hand was born!
What makes your jewellery unique?
Soft, sophisticated shapes with influences from antiquity to the contemporary are combined to create this truly unique range of handmade jewellery.
Sterling silver is often combined with the elegance of gold, the jewellery creations have an elegance, finish and texture only achieved by hand.
The semi-precious stones are sourced from around the globe and selected for their exceptional colours, unusual cuts and textures.
Many of my designs are inspired by the materials; the shape of a stone, the glint of a colour or a unique surface.
I am not a fashion follower, my jewellery has the longevity to transcend fashion trends and to compliment the individuality of the person who wears it at an affordable price.
Has your Greek Australian background been an influence in your work?
To a certain extent ,yes, in that I am fascinated that some jewellery techniques and stones are still used today from antiquity. I would love to learn to reproduce some of the amazing pieces of jewellery from antiquity at one of the traditional workshops in Greece.
How is business currently?
I am happy to say that business is on the up. Australian made is more important and relevant than ever before especially with all the economic turmoil. Small gift shops and boutiques are trying to differentiate in their product offer.
What is your vision for the future of your business?
To maintain a solid business, to keep surprising my customers with new jewellery combining the very best in quality, price and craftsmanship and a perfect balance between family, work, friends and holidays.
What are the major trends for jewellery this year?
Big statement pieces, gold, and of course a piece of jewellery by Connie Dimas – Jewellery by Hand.
