A fire wreaked havoc on a Greek café in Adelaide’s northwestern suburbs, bringing the shop used by the local community’s seniors to ruins.
The Senior Citizen Greek Café, located on Kilkenny Rd in Woodville Park, became victim to a terrible blaze last Thursday night (25 September) at roughly 10.30pm which lit up the furniture, appliances and destroyed the shopfront glass.
The scene required eight fire trucks to contain the fire, which did not drastically impact any of its neighbouring surroundings
Owner George Hizartzidis spoke to 7NEWS about the blaze, which had done most of its damage by the time he had arrived on the scene after getting alerted over the phone by a friend.
“I came down and it was already gone,” he said.
“It’s devastating, there won’t be anywhere else for them (elderly customers) to go.”
Hizartzidis, who has run the café for two and a half years, stressed his belief that the fire was not started on purpose.
“I don’t think it’s suspicious. We’ve never had any issues – just friendly people coming in.”
Police and fire investigators have yet to find a definitive cause, still looking through the wreckage and appealing for witnesses or anyone with CCTV footage to come forward.
