More than 40 wildfires broke out in Greece over the weekend with a blaze that started on the island of Kythera on Friday morning still uncontained.
The continues to burn destroying over 1,700 hectares of farm and forest land. Several villages and monasteries were evacuated and no homes or human casualties have been reported so far, according Kythera mayor Efstratios Harhalakis’ comments to the Associated Press.
The extent of the damage is still to be confirmed by the Greek Fire service as intense winds and highly flammable vegetation aggravate the situation.
More than two hundred firefighters are on the ground assisted with planes and firefighting helicopters.
