The Victorian government this week announced a $15 000 grant for maintenance and restoration of the Australian Hellenic Memorial in Melbourne.
It’s one of Victoria’s most important memorials, and it will now receive the restoration it deserves.
Premier John Brumby announced the funding at Parliament House on Thursday, speaking at the the Hellenic sub-branch of the Returned and Services League of Australia’s celebration of the 70th anniversary of Ohi Day.
“It’s one of Victoria’s most important memorials, and it will now receive the restoration it deserves,” Premier Brumby said.
“I know you’ll be satisfied and proud to see it restored to its former glory.”
Australian Hellenic Memorial President, Pantelis Kalimnakis, acknowledged the government’s financial support in establishing the monument in 1993.
“You started it, and now you’re looking after it,” he said.
He explained the significance of the memorial, in Melbourne’s Domain Gardens.
“It’s not only to commemorate, but to celebrate the bonds that exist between Greece and Australia,” he said.
