The Greek Welfare Centre of South Australia is the welfare agency of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia in South Australia.
As part of of its platform to support the Greek Community, it has recently established a youth program.
“We are running this program on behalf of the Archdiocese which has a 12 month government funding, which goes through till June,” said manager Gale Sulicich.
“The program is designed to encourage Greek youth to maintain their Greek culture, as well as engage in healthy lifestyle choices.” As part of these healthy lifestyle choices, “There are some movement classes for example. Last year we had Greek Dance classes. But we also would like to organise some outside activities, like to the park or to the beach for surfing,” explained Sulicich.
Sulicich then went to say that one of the aims is to develop competencies and self confidence in Youth and to essentially provide them with the tools that will help them deal with the challenges and adversities that they will undoubtedly face in life.
This will be achieved through activity based programs, education, training, and through the mentors that will support the programs, for example: Drug & Alcohol & Gambling awareness meetings as well as cooking and music lessons.
The centre is a non-profit; community based human services organisation, established in 1979. It provides a range of services and programs for people from Greek speaking backgrounds.
Their vision is for excellence in the provision of culturally and linguistically appropriate services, care, advocacy and support to the Greek community.
To achieve this vision the Greek Welfare Centre is working in partnership with Government, service providers and other organisations to ensure that Greek South Australians are offered support and assistance.
