The President of the Greek Republic Karolos Papoulias outlined the efforts being made by the Greek government and people for recovery of the economy, and invited Azeri businesspeople to invest in Greece.

Addressing a business forum in Baku on Wednesday morning that he jointly inaugurated with Azerbaijan’s president Ilham Aliyev, Mr Papoulias urged businesspeople to take advantage of the new investment framework and recent “fast track” law.

Mr Papoulias attended the Greek-Azeri Business Forum during his three-day state visit in the ex-Soviet Union state of Azerbaijan, this week, where he was received by the Azeri President Ilham Aliyev. Addressing the 4th Greek-Azeri Business Forum, Papoulias noted the repercussions of the global economic and credit crisis on the Greek economy, but also stressed the developmental prospects arising.

“We are working for the Greek economy’s speedy return to a recovery track. For that reason, apart from the fiscal streamlining, we are also proceeding with the implementation of developmental policies, which take into consideration our country’s comparative advantages and our productive potential,” Papoulias said. During his visit Mr Papoulias also met with the Greek Diaspora in Azerbaijan.

Talking to the Greek Diaspora, the President of Greece noted the importance of his visit to Baku for boosting relations with Azerbaijan and highly praised the deepening ties between the two countries. Papoulias also spoke about the Greek Diaspora’s role in establishing close relations between Greece and Azerbaijan.

He expressed confidence that the Greek Diaspora in Azerbaijan will play an active role in this regard. Speaking about the recent financial crisis in Greece, Papoulias stressed that the Greek people have faced much more difficult situations in their history. They have always successfully coped with such problems, he said. The Greek Diaspora, in turn, expressed their assurance that bilateral relations will continue to develop strongly.
