Dr Van Coufoudakis, Rector Emeritus, University of Nicosia, Cyprus will be coming to Australia to talk about Cyprus in his speech ‘Cyprus: A Fifty Year Old Republic at Risk?’
Dr Coufoudakis will focus on the achievements and challenges facing the Republic of Cyprus after 50 years of independence.
The current state of the “Cyprus problem” will be examined in the context of the UN sponsored talks led by Australia’s Alexander Downer, the UN Secretary General’s Special Advisor on Cyprus, and recent developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
Dr Coufoudakis is Rector Emeritus at the University of Nicosia, in Cyprus. He served as Rector from 2002 until 2006. He is also Dean Emeritus of the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne, and holds the rank of Professor Emeritus of Political Science. He is the author of three books, the editor of four books, and the author of over 90 journal articles and book chapters published in the US, Great Britain, Belgium, Canada, Italy, Greece and Cyprus.
Dr Coufoudakis served two terms as President of the Modern Greek Studies Association, the premier interdisciplinary organisation in the United States devoted to the study of Modern Greece. In September 1995, he established the Foundation for Hellenic Studies, a foundation dedicated to the promotion and support of the study of Greece and Cyprus in the United States.
