Nominations are now open for the first ever w.comm forum to be held at Parliament House in Canberra on August 21 and 22.

Women aged between 18 and 25 are invited to volunteer to take part in the two-day forum, aimed at finding ways to encourage more women to become engaged in democratic processes and build careers in politics.

Currently only six Commonwealth countries meet the international target of having women make up 30 per cent of their parliaments. The forum has been established by a group of female MPs from across the country who are part of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians Australian region steering committee.

The group’s chair, Lisa Baker, said the forum is a chance for young women to put their ideas on the table and network with women already making a difference in Australia’s parliaments.

“We want to get young women from all across Australia to come to Canberra and learn more about how the parliament works and how you can get more involved in our democratic process,” Ms Baker said.

Ten women from across the country will be chosen to participate in the forum with female politicians from Australian parliaments. Participants will be flown to Canberra where they will take part in a range of activities and workshops at Parliament House while it is sitting. Those interested in participating need to send in a presentation about themselves and can use text, photos, audio and video to tell their story. Nominations close on June 24.
