The Greek community schools of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria are holding their annual family disco and everyone is invited. Mary Houdalakis, from the parents committee of the Doncaster campus of the Greek school, is one of the busy mums organising this event.

“This is the fifth year we are running the disco,” Mary told Neos Kosmos. “It’s run by a group of parents that come together to do something for the kids. And the kids absolutely love it – even if we can’t be bothered putting it on they insist we do,” she says with a giggle. The event is held to say thank you to the family and friends of the Greek community but mainly for the students of the Greek campuses.

“It’s nice for the kids to blend and interact on a social platform with their friends from the schools,” says Mary. “Apart from every Friday at Greek school, this is a great way for them to socialise with Greek music and dancing. It’s a way for them to enjoy their culture.”

All the campuses that provide the Greek community schools, such as Doncaster, Balwyn, Alphington, Albert Park, are invited so this event is not only great for the students to socialise with their friends from school, but to also mingle with others and share their knowledge. Mary says that the disco always gets a great turn out for all the campuses, and with a DJ rocking Greek and English beats all night, it’s pretty obvious why.
