Thirty Victorian sporting associations are to get a share of $10.2 million over the next three years in order to increase cultural diversity in sports.
Health Minister David Davis said at the launch of the VicHealth State Sporting Association Participation Program “this is an important program to create sporting environments which are safe, accessible, inclusive and equitable for women and girls; Aboriginal people; people from culturally diverse communities, with a focus on new arrivals; and people with disabilities”.
“Beyond simply encouraging people to play, the new grants aim to bring about sustainable organisations and cultural change at a state and member level,” Davis said. The health benefits of playing sport and physical activity are numerous. Physical activity can prevent heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, some cancers, obesity as well as protect from common mental health problems, anxiety and depression. Being part of a sporting team also creates a sense of community and feeling of belonging.
“It doesn’t matter how big or small your club is,” said Davis, ” sporting clubs must be open, safe and welcoming places for all Victorians, no matter your gender, race, religion, sexuality, age or ability.”
