A punter who owed more than $80,000 to a prominent online betting agency has been cleared of all debt after the agency agreed to cancel his debt.
The man, who suffers from mental illness, said he was lured into taking credit from Sportsbet.com.au when the continiously offered him credit. He was taken to the Federal Court in July by Sportsbet after his debts were so bad he was at risk of losing his house and becoming bankrupt.
Senator Nick Xenophon acted pro-bono on this case and it is understood that they all came to an agreement to cancel the mans debt. Xenophon has drafted a bill that aims to ban free bets.
