Health Minister Andreas Loverdos and Defense Minister Panos Beglitis announced the involvement of the military in Athens for a program rehabilitating drug addicts.
New units, replacing existing branches of the Organization Against Drugs (OKANA), will be set up at the military hospital in Penteli and the army barracks in Goudi to provide methadone to registered addicts needing help. The aim is for most of the 7,000 people on OKANA’s waiting list to have joined the program by December.
Meanwhile, conscripts currently addicted to drugs, will have their terms reduced by up to six months if they join the program.
