The Hellenic Foundation for Culture, in association with the Hellenic Museum sets sail with its latest exhibition on 23 September, celebrating the evolution of Hellenic maritime craft through the ages.
The exhibition titled A Journey on the Waves of History presents model seafaring vessels dating from 5th Century BC to 19th Century AD, and will run until February.
Writing in the exhibition’s catalogue, President of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, Professor George Babiniotis says: “The sea is an element which is completely interwoven in Hellenic history and culture; it is also the element that brings different people and cultures together, uniting and often, inspiring individuals.”
A Journey on the Waves of History will present the work of model maker Evangelos Grypiotis, who has been studying and constructing exquisitely detailed models of ancient vessels for 25 years. Visitors to the exhibition will gain a unique insight into Greece’s maritime history.
“Beside the visual splendour presented, visitors to the exhibition will also discover themes encompassing shipbuilding, history, ethnology, mythology, economics and democracy,” says Professor Babiniotis.
“The second half of 2011 promises to be a very exciting time for the Hellenic Museum and the Hellenic Foundation for Culture in Melbourne,” added Mr Harry Stamoulis, Chairman of The Hellenic Museum,
“With this amazing exhibition and a second commencing in late November, we are working tirelessly to engulf the people of Melbourne in Hellenic history and the arts. Both exhibitions have a specially catered tour for visitors, and in particular for primary and secondary school students. I would encourage people to book early in order not to miss these magnificent opportunities to learn and discover the mystical life of the ancient mariner”.
A Journey on the Waves of History – Miniature Model Ships dating from 5th Century BC to 19th Century AD runs at The Hellenic Museum, 280 William Street, Melbourne, from 23 September 2011 to 26 February, 2012. The exhibition is open Monday to Friday 10 am to 4 pm, and also by appointment.
