If you were part of Greek Orthodox Youth of Australia (GOYA) Hellenic Brisbane, you will want to know about this. A reunion dinner that will cover every era of GOYA will be held on Saturday 9 October and will revisit the last 44 years.

A night filled will anecdotes and memories is on the cards as people reminisce about a time in their lives that was so important.

GOYA first started in Brisbane after two Greek Orthodox youth groups joined and created GOYA Hellenic Brisbane between 1965 and 1967.

Desley Lagos, committee member, GOYA Hellenic Brisbane, said her time at GOYA was a “great opportunity for us to meet as in those days you weren’t allowed to go out, it’s very different to today”. “We would have lots of different functions to meet and go out in groups. A lot of strong relationships have formed, even marriages,” she said.

Lagos told Neos Kosmos that although there have been a lot of reunions in the past, this one is different. This one is going to capture all the memories and archive the history of this organisation.

“This is the first reunion of this size, and the first one to go right back to the beginning of GOYA’s 44 years. What we are focusing on now is preserving our history, so we are using this opportunity to collect a lot of memorabilia and start archiving. So GOYA, what we do now and what we did then, will represent the history of Greeks in Brisbane.”

The dinner has been broken up into era’s so attendees can take part in accordance with the year they were a member of GOYA. Each era will contribute pages to a program, based on the theme of their choice.

“We have a coordinator so we can get in touch with people all over Australia now, or in New York, all over the world so they can contribute too. I am on the ’67 to ’72 era and we’ve decided to call our pages of the program Reflections and anecdotes so I am getting stories from people all around,” Lagos said.

The GOYA Hellenic Brisbane reunion dinner 1967 to 2011 will take place on Saturday 9 October at the Greek Club, Edmonstone Street, South Brisbane. Tickets are $100 per person for a three course dinner. Bookings are essential. Contact Desley Lagos on 0418 989 917 or email goyabrisbane@gmail.com
