Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu recently announced the 2012 Australian Day ambassadors.

The group of 147 Victorians was chosen to represent the diverse communities that make up the state, and will support next year’s Australia Day celebrations on January 26.

“These ambassadors, drawn from the arts, sports, entertainment, community and business arenas, represent the aspiration and ambition that have made Victoria a leader in many ways,” Mr Baillieu said. Mr George Lekakis, CEO of the aged care facility Fronditha Care, is a lifetime Australia Day Ambassador. He will be based in Glen Waverley where he will be welcoming celebrations at the Australia Day breakfast.

“Being a local resident at the City of Monash, I am proud to be able to speak to the community about my love for Australia and the opportunities it’s given me,” he said.

Other Australia Day ambassadors from the Greek community are: Stella Axarlis, Board Member of Phillip Island Nature Park; news presenter George Donikian; former CEO of the Royal District Nursing service Dan Romanis; and Mike Zafiropoulos, chair of Channel 31.
