Activision Blizzard, distributors of the Call of Duty franchise, must be smoking big fat cigars and dancing in the streets. Their global smash video game Modern Warfare 3 has achieved the impossible: $1 billion in sales within 16 days of release. Even the Oscar-winning 3-D movie blockbuster Avatar took 17 days to reach $1 billion in sales.

The first-person shooter video game follows on from the earlier instalment, Modern Warfare 2, which took a relatively glacial 60 days to hit the billion dollar mark.

The graphics and gameplay are absolutely state of the art, as you would expect from a game of this magnitude. The game includes characters from previous instalments and provides a number of gaming options including missions and “death matches”, where you can play against other COD junkies (or “Call of Duty”, for all you ‘nubes’) from around the world.

So if you want to be the favourite aunt or uncle this Christmas, this game should be on your shopping list.

I’d love to be at this Activision Christmas party this year!
