Federal MP Steve Georganas officially opened the $9 million Michael Herbert Bridge (Wodlibulto Wadlakatta) over Patawalonga Lake in South Australia last week.
Thanks to petitioning by local residents, the new bridge was named in memory of Michael Herbert (Wodlibulto Wadlakatta), an RAAF Flying Officer of indigenous descent, who grew up nearby in Glenelg North.
Herbert was listed as missing in Vietnam in 1970 after his Canberra bomber went down in the jungle near the Laos border whilst on a mission. His remains were finally found and brought home to Australia in 2009.
The new bridge which was funded through the federal government’s Nation Building Roads to Recovery Program and The City of Holdfast Bay Council, is expected to carry 11,000 vehicles every day.
