New teachers in Victorian government schools are being employed on short-term contracts with over half of the the new teachers suffering from job insecurity. The short-term contracts offered mean that many of them aren’t able to receive holiday pay, and in some cases have financial insecurity.

A survey conducted by the Australian Education Union found that 50 per cent of the new teachers were so disatisfied that they were planning on leaving their roles as teachers within ten years.

The teachers interviewed for the survey also said that the lack of job security had a negative effect on their teaching ability.
