A house in Reservoir, Victoria, caught fire in the early hours last Thursday, with the sole occupant only just escaping safely.

Peter Grapsas, 19, was fast asleep as the fire started, and woke up when police thumped on his window at 2.30am. “I was by myself. A friend had come over earlier and left around midnight. I fell asleep soon after,” Peter told Neos Kosmos.

“I was lucky I heard the police bang on my windows. I checked where the fire was coming from and ran out the back of the house.”

Police had been patrolling around the Reservoir area on Henty St when they saw smoke billowing out of a unit. Constables David Carroll and Cameron Curtis then proceeded to knock on the doors and windows of Mr Grapsas’ house.

Neighbours were also alerted to the fire, although the blaze did not spread to other properties in the area. Four pumpers, a rescue unit and an aerial unit worked to control the blaze.

While Mr Grapsas said while insurers are still assessing the damage done to the property, an estimated $100,000 damage was done to the home.
