Sydney is about to get a piece of Melbourne’s culinary scene with their very own Jimmy Grants.

Following on from the positive reception across Victoria and Queensland, owner and MasterChef judge George Calombaris is planning on opening his sixth store in the harbour city’s hip suburb of Surry Hills.

The souvlaki bar will open later this year on Albion Street, where the celebrity chef and his business partner George Sykiotis have purchased two buildings that will be merged into one restaurant.

“We have a really clear growth [plan] for the next five years,” brand manager Letisha Dall told Broadsheet.

“We’re planning to open 20 Jimmy Grants stores in New South Wales, with the flagship store in Surry Hills.”

The Greek eatery is expected to be a welcome addition to the already bustling inner city suburb, with Jimmy Grants known for its loud music and late-night food culture reminiscent of that in Athens.

“The music is pumping, our crew are having a great time, and the food comes out really quickly,” said Ms Dall.

Given Calombaris’ fine dining background – he is known for his restaurants The Press Club and Gazi, the chef has ensured the same skill and attention to detail is brought to Jimmy Grants.

Meanwhile those familiar with the souvlaki bars that are already open know that each has a great aesthetic, which is also sure to be the case in Sydney, but Ms Dall says the new location will have its own identity.

“Each of our stores has a unique design which talks to the history of Greek immigrants starting a new life in Australia,” said Ms Dall. “The Surry Hills store will be no different.”
