Some of the best winemakers and wine educators Greece has to offer are heading Down Under in June for the third time to showcase 90 of the country’s best and latest wines as part of Wines of Greece.

First-time and returning wineries will take part in a series of trade and consumer tastings in Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide, including in-depth masterclasses led by Yannis Karakasis MW, Greece’s second and newest Master of Wine.

Wines will be featured from the Peloponnese through to Santorini, and will include a number of Greek indigenous varieties such as xinomavro, agiorgitiko and mavrotragano, along with new-wave wines from the next generation of winemakers now emerging.

In an interview with Food Mag, Wines of Greece President Vangelis Argyris said the winemakers were looking forward to returning to Australia.

“There is unprecedented demand for Greek wines with a 30 per cent increase in sales in Australia over the last two years. Our native grape varieties are leading this demand and we’re hoping to bring some new varieties in June that haven’t been widely seen in Australia before,” he said.

“We are thrilled Australia has [fallen] in love with Greek wines and so excited for this third tour in as many years.”

As part of their trip Down Under, Wines of Greece will also be running private masterclasses for retailers, distributors, hotels and restaurant groups.

A wine meet-and-greet will take place at Georges on Waymouth in Adelaide on Wednesday 21 June and at Oinofilia at Melbourne’s Meat Market on Saturday 24 June. For more information on New Wines of Greece, visit newwinesofgreece.com or like them on Facebook at @newwinesofgreece
