Epson, the company best known for its multi award-winning dot matrix printers in the 80s and 90s, has thrown its hat into the head-mounted display arena.

The Company announced their new Moverio product last week, which is a see-through 3D head-mounted display (or HMD for the technocrats) which is powered by Android. The product creates the experience of watching 3D (or 2D) pictures on a virtual 80-inch display that’s 5 meters away, while still allowing the wearer to see what’s happening in the real world. It also includes a 1GB internal memory and microSD slot, and comes with a small controller.

With MPEG4/MPEG4 AVC/H.264 video files support, the Moverio provides 960 x 540 screen resolution on its 0.52 inch displays. No news yet on pricing or availability, but expect to see something hit our shores in late 2012.
