Microsoft chose the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona this week to preview its new Windows 8 operating system.

The product is the first Windows operating system to be designed to run on low-power ARM microprocessors, a far cry from the previous power-hungry Windows versions. Microsoft’s vision is to effectively build one operating system to run across all platforms, from smartphones, to tablets, to desktops.

The company demonstrated the synergies with a variety of products, and demonstrated how “living, breathing tiles” bring the products to life. Building on the well-received Windows Phone 7 operating system, Windows 8 creates a consistent look and feel across all products. Users will be able to download the preview version from the Microsoft website from next week.

One operating system to rule them all? Sounds like a job for Frodo!
