Artist George Tzikas will be exhibiting his latest collection titled Immemorial Presence, at the Glen Eira City Council Gallery.

The exhibition will feature large and small scale abstract and figurative oil paintings sourced from architectural spaces and structures. I refer to classical mythology and religious themes along with the eastern conception of the void, to pursue the depths and significance of the poetic image.

Tzikas told Neos Kosmos his “works are predominantly painted in a loose and gestural manner that allows for ambiguous and dynamic movement between figure and space. Emotive ambiguity and mystery are important elements in my work, as they attempt to draw the viewer into pondering and meditating on the poetic elements that may be present.

“Tension between figure and space, whether to insert the figure into my works or not is a major consideration for me. Spaces and figures are simultaneously intellectual and cultural constructs and timeless phenomenological and emotive expressions that attempt to reveal the deeper layers within which the human imagination is embedded in.”

Tzikas says through his work, he wants to help the viewer “access an experience of immemorial presence”.

“This is the source of ‘presence’ that I believe the ancient Greeks intuited and gave shape and meaning to through the classical arts: architecture, sculpture, mathematics etc. They intuited an invisible rational order of symmetry and harmony: an order stripped of all extraneous detail – bare, timeless and immemorial. A beauty that defies cultural definitions.

Immemorial Presence will be exhibiting at the Glen Eira City Council Gallery, Corner Glen Eira and Caulfield Road, Caulfield, from March 29 – April 15. For more information contact (03) 9524 3402.
