A search had been underway to find the missing archimandrite Andreas Bolovinos of the Metropolis of Mani since the early hours of Monday, while the local authorities feared for his life.

The high-ranking cleric reportedly boarded his car approximately at 7.30pm on Monday to visit the local cemetery. The archimandrite was on his to check the grave of a deceased high-ranking church official that had allegedly been damaged by the weather. At the time extreme weather phenomena were swiping through South Peloponnese. His mobile, however, reportedly stopped transmitting at 7.20pm.

According to media outlet Lakonikos.gr Andreas Mpolovinos, 63, was found dead on Tuesday afternoon in his car which had sunk several metres below sea level outside Kamares in Gytheio.

The local community is deeply shocked and saddened by Andreas Mpolovinos’ death; a church figure that was well known and respected for his charitable work and his progressive views that helped keep younger generations closer to the Church.
