There’s a world record for everything, even garlic braids, and until this week that record was held by Hungary with 255 metres. But that record has well and truly been trumped by a woman from Nea Vyssa in Thrace, with a garlic braid totalling 612 metres and 70 centimetres.

Dimitra Athanasova Tzoridou competed for the title in the 18th International Trade Fair Alexpo 2018 in Alexandroupolis.

The impressive feat took her close to 16 hours and 20,000 garlic heads, equalling over 2,000 kilograms of garlic.

“It was a very difficult experience,” Ms Tzoridou said. “Fortunately, we did it.”

The four-day bi-annual event is aimed at promoting local businesses and entrepreneurs in the Prefecture of Evros.

Given Ms Tzoridou’s achievement, this year President of the Evros Chamber, Christodoulos Topsidis said they have decided to promote the garlic of Nea Vyssa, which according to Head of the Evros Agricultural Economics and Development Department, Paschalis Papadakis is a worthy choice for a number of reasons.

Mr Papadakis said analysis of the region has shown its qualitative characteristics are superior compared to five other types of garlic, with the substance allycin, which is known to aid a number of diseases, higher in both the quantity and quality.

To officially claim the world record, the necessary paperwork has been sent to the Guinness World Records.
