If you have lived in -or visited- Greece over the past 10 years, chances are you’ve had a white at Mikel, the country’s leading coffee chain.

Since the first Mikel store opening in Larissa in 2008, Mikel Coffee has expanded so much there is more than one in every suburb or every town.

Mikel Coffee even has international presence in UAE and Cyprus thanks to the retail concept of quality take-away coffee envisioned by the founder Emmanuel Kyriakakis that reshaped consumers’ habits, gaining massive appeal.

A successful 10 years expansion, currently numbers near to 200 shops internationally with the headquarters of the company having moved to London in 2015, to support its global expansion.

After years of Australia’s growing Greek population demanding Mikel to branch out Down Under, the first shop opens in Sydney’s Five Dock this Saturday, 25 August.

“Mikel Coffee is growing to respond to the continuously increasing demands of its customers,” Mikel Coffee Company Au wrote in a Facebook announcement earlier this week.

“A new chain spot in Sydney is now joining our chain of stores,” it continued, inviting everyone to attend the Grand Opening to enjoy the brand’s 40 signature beverages first hand.

The company’s Australian page has already garnered thousands of followers, the majority of whom Greek or people that have enjoyed the Mikel staples in Greece whilst there on holiday.

The general sentiment is pretty much contained in the most liked comment: “Omg! Please let this be real. Greece in a cup all summer!”.

Meanwhile, there have been rumours of the chain expanding to Melbourne, with Oakleigh and the CBD vying over the location.

While no one can deny how popular, generous and tasty Mikel’s coffee is, the company found itself under fire last year after 103 investigations following up on uninsured employment reports.

Three employees working at Mikel had not been insured while 35 more has their hours under-reported; 15 fair work violations were also found.

In Larissa and Drama, there have been several fair work complains filed by employees who have not received their legal award or overtime while another employee was reportedly laid off for demanding her wages.

It is worth mentioning, however, that Mikel Coffee is a company with over 2,000 employees across a business network that includes several franchise shops.
