New scientific research conducted by Greek scientists will have you crawling back into bed in no time.A practice very popular amongst Mediterraneans – especially Greeks and Italians – the siesta, is apparently good for our health!

According to the data made public by doctors at the Asklepieion General Hospital in Voula, Attiki midday napping can be highly beneficial for stress relief and lower high blood pressure.

Scientists have analysed data from 212 people, and a regular hour-long nap had remarkable results in lowering hypertension which long-term would reduce risk of  heart disease and stroke.

Each volunteer wore a blood pressure monitor and the ones who slept for one hour a day experienced an average drop of 3mm Hg in blood pressure, compared to those who didn’t.

“Midday sleep appears to lower blood pressure levels at the same magnitude as other lifestyle changes,” the study’s co-author, Dr Manolis Kallistratos, noted.

“For example, salt and alcohol reduction can bring blood pressure levels down by 3 to 5 mm Hg. Based on our findings, if someone has the luxury to take a nap during the day, it may also have benefits for high blood pressure.”

This news couldn’t have come at a better time, with International Napping Day falling on 11 March this year!
