Eight people were arrested following the abandonment of Sunday’s anticipated Greek Super League derby between eternal rivals Olympiacos and Panathinaikos.

Video footage showed fans clashing with police outside the Olympic Stadium in Athens, and attacking officials on the Olympiacos bench. The footage assisted police in making their arrests.

There was signs of tension at the beginning of the game, but things erupted after the 53rd minute, when Miguel Angel Guerrero scored for Olympiacos. A number of Panathinaikos fans proceeded to clash with police.

Besides these horrific events, there were many other interesting games during round 25 of the Super League.

In the most highly anticipated of the lot, Atromitos welcomed AEK at Peristeri, hoping to gain the advantage over them as the two teams continued to fight for the third place that leads to a better position in next season’s Europa League qualifiers.

The two teams gave it their all and fans had the opportunity to witness one of the better games in the league.

The competition’s first scorer, Atromitos’ Eftymis Koulouris was a constant threat for the visitor’s goal, yet on several occasions he was defeated by the AEK goalkeeper Anestis Barkas, who seemed to be in great form.

On the other hand, the champions were not keen to simply sit back in defence and had their own fair share of chances with Marco Livaja and Uros Cosic. Despite the many chances created on both sides, it seemed the two clubs had neutralised each other and were heading for a goalless draw until the 85th minute when AEK launched a counterattack, finding the Atromitos defence unorganised. Albanis was nicely set up against goalkeeper Theodorakis and calmly chipped the ball over him to give the three points to his team.

Meanwhile, PAOK came very close to their first defeat of the season against Panetolikos, but a quick comeback ensured they would build on their winning streak.

In the rest of the games, Panionios claimed a hard-earned 1-0 win against Xanthi at home, while Levadiakos couldn’t put up much of a fight in Crete, losing 2-0 to OFI.
