Stefanos Tsitsipas has emerged victorious over Pablo Cuevas at the Estoril Open in Portugal, winning his first clay court title on Sunday.

The Greek young gun, who was the top seed, won in straight sets against the Uruguayan, 6-3 7-6 (7-4).

The 20-year-old was on the ball, taking advantage of Cuevas’ struggles, which resulted in an early break at 4-3 in the second.

His opponent stepped up after that, breaking Tsitsipas, by winning nine consecutive points. However it wasn’t enough to win the game, with the Greek regaining his composure and coming backs strong to take the win in a tiebreak.

“I was very calm. I stayed aggressive, stayed motivated, didn’t think too much,” Tsitsipas said after the match.

“He didn’t get into my head after he broke me back in the second set. That was kind of frustrating, but I kept fighting, kept believing that I can still win it in two sets.”

The Australian Open semi-finalist isn’t getting a rest anytime soon.

Following his success in Portugal, Tsitsipas will now go on to play back-to-back ATP Masters tournaments in Spain and Italy, before heading to the French Open.

“I’ve been building my game. It hasn’t been an easy transition from hard to clay this year, so I’ve been trying to play as many matches as I can before the big events start,” he said.
