Well-known Greek Australian academic, Professor Nick Papastergiadis is a candidate in the upcoming Greek elections, as part of Yanis Varoufakis’ party MeRA25.
The news was officially announced on MeRA25’s website by Varoufakis himself, who has been friends with the Professor for some time.
“It is with honour, joy and enthusiasm that MeRA25 today announces its cooperation with Nick Papastergiadis and his accession to MeRA25’s Council of State Ballot (elected based on the percentage the party receives),” Varoufakis wrote.
“Nick, a leading contemporary art critic, is the Director of the Research Unit in Public Cultures at The University of Melbourne, where he is a Professor in the School of Culture and Communication. Previously he was a professor at the universities of Manchester, Glasgow and Cambridge. He has collaborated with great artists and intellectuals such as John Berger, Jimmie Durham and Sonya Boyce.
“In recent years, he has been writing books, giving lectures, and researching the transformation of contemporary art and cultural institutions (e.g. Museums) due to the evolution of digital technology. For decades, Nick has been advising governments, institutes, public and private institutions on matters of cultural identity. His large bibliography includes books such as ‘Modernity as Exile’ (1993), ‘Cosmopolitanism and Culture’ (2012), and ‘Ambient Screens’ (2016).
“As an active Greek of the diaspora, Nick actively participates in the Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture in Melbourne.”
