A tourism campaign for North Macedonia clearly violating the Prespes Agreement sparked media controversy this week.

The promotional tourism website, using the motto ‘Macedonia Timeless’, supplies information to prospective visitors, much of which revolves around ancient Macedonia. Greek press sites around the world criticised the site causing North Macedonia to officially correct its motto.

The site claimed to be “Macedonia’s official tourism website” which links today’s citizens of North Macedonia with the region’s ancient past, which is a violation of the Prespes Agreement.

Meanwhile the geographic descriptor of ‘north’ was nowhere to be found on the site until Friday when it was changed.

The controversial agreement signed by North Macedonia and Greece was seen as an opportunity to resolve the long-standing name dispute between the two neighbours. While North Macedonia did make notable changes to begin with, such as changing signage, removing statues of Alexander the Great and changing its name, there have since been some provocative moves.

Many people have expressed their concern on the website’s Facebook page, claiming that the page is deceptive and calling on the administrators to alter its name to North Macedonia.
