That time of the season has come around again for rugby fans, as they hold their breath to see who will survive and who drops out of the final rounds.

Among the teams to make it all the way to the third round, now only one game away from the Grand Final, are Nick Pappas’ South Sydney Rabbitohs.

They are up against the Canberra Raiders in their bid to return to the titles for the first time since 2014 when they won their one and only premiership.

While it is worth mentioning that they have not been playing their best rugby so far, ending their regular season in third place with a total of eight losses, they’ve been able to keep their dream alive.

And although they lost their first game in the finals against local rivals Sydney Roosters, they managed to bounce back and pull off a win against the Manly Eagles.
Now they will face their toughest challenge yet for a place in the Grand Final.

Club chairman, Mr Pappas, who also happens to be the President of The Hellenic Initiative (THI) Australia, was one of the names rumoured to be up for the position of the Australian Rugby League Commissioner.

But he denied all speculation, claiming that there was first some “unfinished business” he needed to take care of with the club, pointing towards the addition of more silverware to the team’s collection.

Of course all eyes this weekend will be focused on the second game between the Roosters and the Storm, with the two teams holding three premierships each, but the story of the underdog always carries with it a certain appeal.

And even if they do win in Canberra, the greatest challenge for the Rabbitohs still lies ahead of them.

What they will accomplish remains to be seen.

The Rabbitohs face the Raiders on Friday 27 September at 7.50 pm.
