Top 10: Greece is Selfie central, and here are some suggestions for the perfect holiday selfie

1. Acropolis Selfie

The birthplace of democracy fills tourists with wonder, and there’s nothing like a selfie with the iconic landmark in the background to capture the special moment atop the hill.

2. Grande Bretagne

The 140-year-old Hotel Grande Bretagne has a designated ‘Selfie Spot’ for guests at the GB Roof Garden Restaurant that looks across at the Parthenon. “The uninterrupted views of the Acropolis, Lycabettus Hill and the Parliament are truly magnificent. The Panathenaic Stadium, the Plaka and Anafiotika add to the magical background of Athens,” reads a statement on the restaurant’s website.

3. Zakynthos shipwreck

The rusted Navagio shipwreck washed up on the white sands of the turqoise Navagio Beach is a site to behold and a selfie waiting to happen. For an additional twist, thrill-seeking base-jumpers take selfies while flinging themselves from the cliffs above. Others, however, have lost their lives standing close to the cliff edges while trying to capture the stunning view.

4. Skiathos airport

Every so often terrifying footage emerges from the Greek holiday island of Skiathos as holiday makers risk their lives to take selfies with passenger jets roaring in to land just a few feet above their heads. The landing strip, built just yards from the sea, is a draw for thrill-seeking tourists wishing to capture spectacular landings. A sign says ‘Danger please keep away from the aircraft blast’ is mainly ignored by plane spotters wishing to capture that perfect selfie in an accident just waiting to happen.

5. Caldera selfie

The caldera of Santorini, with its rugged cliffs and white sugar-cubed houses sprinkled with fuchsia bougainville plants, is one of the most photographed places in Greece. It’s a view that’s launched a thousand selfies, with a myriad tourists – with or without selfie sticks – stumbling over each other while trying to capture that perfect selfie pose.

7. Protest selfie

Show the world how socially conscious you are by taking  selfie at a cause you support. And for that added dramatic affect, go to any rally in a Greek city to ensure you get tear gas, firebombs, and a bit of action in the background.

8. Refugee selfie

Apparently, the refugee selfie is a thing in Greece as swarms of people arriving on small dinghies on the Aegean islands celebrate with photos. These photos are not about vanity, but a way for them to document the journey they had.

9. Museum selfie

One reddit user made a statement about selfies by photographing Greco-Roman statues at the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork, Ireland, in a way that makes them look as though they are using selfies. It was an innovative way to photograph the sculptures, but those wishing to follow suit should follow a few basic rules. First: don’t touch the art. Second: Don’t take selfies while touching the art. One young student reportedly destroyed the Hellenistic statue known as ‘Drunken Satyr’ at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera after climbing onto the statue’s lap to take a selfie.
