A Greek owned company specialising in the growing of olives and the production of organic olive oils won ‘gold’ at the Organics Expo held in Melbourne two weekends ago.

Kailis Organic Olive Groves shared the first prize for the Best Organic Food product.

The company manages olive groves at Preston Valley, Avon Valley, Twin Brooks and Dandaragan in Western Australia and has won international and national awards for their organic olive oils.

The company run by third generation Kastellorizian, Mark Kailis, has won silver awards for its Premium and Chefs Blends olive oils in 2007 and 2008 at the Los Angeles International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition and has consistently won silver and bronze awards for its extra virgin and infused olive oils at olive oil shows across Australia.

The Kailis family has a long history of involvement in the food production and food service industry.

George Peter Kailis first came to Australia in 1917 from Kastellorizo.

His sons and grandchildren have been involved in seafood processing and fishing business and founded Red Rooster, a conglomerate of barbecue chicken fast food outlets, which was later sold to the Coles Myer Group.

The Kailis family has also been involved in food manufacturing and food distribution.
