The recently appointed president of the European Central Bank (ECB), Christine Lagarde, said that she was impressed by Greece’s growth rates and its fiscal position.

Ms Lagarde spoke about Greece’s improvement situation after chairing her first ECB meeting as the new president, welcomed  Greece’s economic recovery and she said that results achieved so far were impressive.

She told AMA that she would maintain the bank’s firm position that if Greek bonds were to participate in the program of quantitative easing, the rules relating to the eligibility of securities had to be observed.

“When Greek bonds become eligible, they will be included in the ECB’s securities trading program,” she said.

While growth in the 19 member countries to the ECB was weak, she said “there are some initial signs of stabilization in the growth slowdown”.

She said she would consider more opinions before making policy. Ms Lagrande is the first woman to lead the ECB, a role she assumed on 1 November after eight years as the managing director of the International Monetary Fund. Her predecessor at the ECB was Mario Draghi.
