Universities in Greece are set to open their doors to even more students with the introduction of foreign-language programs.

According to Kathimerini, legislation that is being prepared by the Ministry of Education will give universities greater freedom when it comes to introducing courses in other languages without the need for ministerial approval.

Universities will be required to put together a proposal for approval from the university’s senate, and beyond that will only require permission from the National Accreditation Council.

To begin with, the new legislation will only apply to the study areas of medicine and engineering. There are plans to expand it to other faculties.

By offering courses in languages other than Greek, the aim is to attract more non-European Union students and to increase revenue through tuition fees.

Meanwhile it will also give Greek students the chance to take courses in another language, helping to develop their language skills.
