The ugrade of the Athens’ iconic Omonia Square is set to be completed by next week said the city’s mayor on social media on Thursday.

Mayor Kostas Bakoyiannis said that the fountain had been filled with water and the final work is being done to upgrade the square that is at the heart of the city.

Omonia Square, one of the Greek capital’s oldest squares, forms the intersection of six main streets and is one of the city’s main traffic hubs. It was built as part of the city plans that were originally drafted in the 19th Century.

Omonia Square is also the central station for the city’s rail metro system. A number of new hotels are set to open on the roads around the square. The Bageion and Alexandros hotels are to be reopened. The Bageion was built between 1890-94 by architect Ernst Ziller

As part of the upgrade, the municipality will create a seating area, upgrade the drainage around the Square and repair its waterproofing structures.

The mayor said on social media: “Very happy that Omonia Square has entered the final stretch and will be delivered to the Athenians.”

He also uploaded a video that showed the fountain working and added that this was “the last time we see the fountain empty of water”.
