When the Foundation for Hellenic Studies in Adelaide decided to organise a reception with former Greek Finance Minister and MeRA25 leader Yanis Varoufakis as a special guest, they never expected the event would sell out in just two days.

The Foundation, a not-for-profit entity, is chaired by the Honorable Greg Crafter AO and run by volunteers.

“When it was announced that Yanis Varoufakis a politician, academic and author who is often referred to as the ‘rock star economist’, was coming to Australia to attend and present his work at Adelaide Writer’s Week, we seized the chance to request a reception with him,” Ms Connie Kosti, Spokesperson for the Foundation, told Neos Kosmos.

“The response to the event has been tremendous, extraordinary. We never expected it to sell out in just two days, so we can only assume that people in Australia have a lot of questions they want to discuss with the former Minister.”

The reception will be held at the Keith Murdoch House in Adelaide from 6pm until 8pm on Tuesday, 3 March.

Mr Varoufakis who is also Professor of Economics at the University of Athens and an Honorary Professor of Political Economy at the University of Sydney, will meet with members and leaders of the community in order to discuss the current political and economic climate in Europe and Australia.

This is the first planned talk of the ‘In Conversation’ series with prominent guests, leading up to and for the bicentennial of the declaration of the Greek War of Independence (1821).

“The Foundation for Hellenic Studies is always keen to organise events that give our audiences opportunities to explore language, culture, causes and more, and of course against a background of hospitality. This is also our first event pairing with NUGAS SA, to attract our future leaders, economists and politicians,” Ms Kosti said.

Past presenters and speakers have included Geoffrey Robertson AO QC, who gave a keynote presentation supporting the return of the Parthenon Marbles, Greek Australian actress Mary Coustas, Nick Pappas AM, Andrew Demetriou, Amanda Vanstone AO, and Gold Logie Award Winner Costa Georgiadis.
