Disgraced former NSW Labor politician Milton Orkopoulos, a convicted pedophile, will plead not guilty to charges that he breached parole conditions when he allegedly contacted a relative, created an Instagram account and used an internet-enabled phone.

Mr Orkopoulos, who was charged on five counts of failing to comply with his reporting obligations under the Child Protection Act, has been back in prison following more than 11 years in jail after being found guilty of grooming and assaulting three boys from 1995 through to 2006. Neither Mr Orkopoulos nor his lawyer, Omar Juweinat, appeared in court for the brief mention and he not apply for bail though he was bail-refused.

It is alleged he called his daughter in January and had a brief conversation with another relative during the same call. It is also alleged that he created an Instagram account under his own name which he failed to disclose to the police until later on 8 January.

He was arrested in January and released on bail, however was arrested again on 20 February after allegedly using an internet-enabled phone which below from a fellow resident at the Malabar halfway house where he lived.

Mr Orkopoulos will appear again at the Central Local Court via an audio-visual link on 14 July, and a joint hearing dealing with the allegations concerning parole breaches is expected to take place in December.

He will also face 15 new charges on child sex abuse that were brought against him. He will next appear at Newcastle Local Court on 20 August when the police brief against him is expected to be completed.
